Cardiac Valve Replacement

Improper functioning of the valves is the main reason for Heart valve disease. Sometimes there is a problem with valve opening and closing, which leads to inadequate blood flow in the body and this can only be corrected by repairing or replacing the valves. A diseased valve could be any from all four valves (aortic valve, mitral valve, tricuspid valve & pulmonary valve). A heart valve replacement surgery is only performed in those cases where repair of the valve is not possible.

In Heart valve replacement surgery, heart valves are replaced with an artificial valve or a bioprosthesis.

Surgical Procedure for Valve Replacement

  • This procedure is always done under general anesthesia.
  • The incision is made through the sternum to expose the heart.
  • During the procedure, the Cardiopulmonary bypass machine helps the patient to breathe and allows the blood to flow.
  • Depending on which valve needs replacement, an incision is made on the atrium to expose the malfunctioning valve and after its removal, an artificial valve is placed.
  • Then, atrium closing is done and the cardiopulmonary bypass unit is also removed.
  • After that, the Patient is shifted into the ICU from the OT.
  • To check whether the new valve is working properly, doctors use a transesophageal echocardiogram.
