Thalassemia

A blood disorder in which the body has less hemoglobin than normal is known as Thalassemia. Mild thalassemia does not require any treatment but the severe form requires a blood transfusion. A healthy diet and regular exercise works wonder in coping with the fatigue in this disease.

Symptoms

  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Pale skin
  • Facial bone deformities
  • Slow growth
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Dark urine

Causes

This is a genetically inherited disease that is passed from the parents to the children.

  • High levels of Iron
  • Infection

  • Slowed growth rates
  • Heart problems

Treatment

  • Frequent blood transfusions – blood transfusion is required every few weeks in severe cases of thalassemia.
  • Chelation therapy – to remove excess iron from the blood, chelation therapy is done.
  • Stem cell transplant - This procedure involves infusing healthy stem cells into the body. This procedure can eliminate the need for regular blood transfusion.

Prevention

  • PGD IVF: There is a procedure to avoid passing the genes to the baby, known as a preimplantation genetic diagnosis. It is performed during in vitro fertilization (IVF) to thoroughly examine embryos to select sickle-free embryos for transfer or implantation.
  • PRENATAL TESTS: It is a test that is done to check whether the baby has or has not inherited genes from the parents before giving birth. There are two types of tests: 1. Chorionic Villus sampling (CVS) 2. Amniocentesis

  • Avoid excess iron
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Keep your bones healthy
  • Avoid infections
  • Vaccinations
