Coronary Angioplasty and Stents

A procedure that is used to open jammed arteries, is known as Coronary Angioplasty. A small balloon catheter is fitted in a blocked artery to make it wide and ease the blood flow. A small line mesh tube is often placed in angioplasty, which is called a stent. It eases the blood flow and also stops it from narrowing again.

Indications for Angioplasty

  • Chest Pain
  • Medicines are not effective.

Risk Factors

  • Stroke
  • Blood clots
  • Bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Abnormal heart rate
  • Re-narrowing of the arteries

Procedure

  • Angioplasty is performed in a special operating room called a cardiac catheterization laboratory.
  • General anesthesia is not required and the patient could be awake during the procedure.
  • Some medicines will be given to the patient via IV infusion.
  • Vital signs will be checked during the procedure.
  • After sterilization, local anesthesia is applied to the targeted area.
  • An incision is made to pass a wire into the artery.
  • Then, a catheter is placed in the circulation & dye is injected which enables the physician to recognize the blockage on the angiogram.
  • Finally, a small balloon catheter is fitted in a blocked artery to make it wide and ease the blood flow.

Stent Placement

mesh, supports the walls of your roadway, and helps help it from re-narrowing after angioplasty.

Procedure

  • The stent is collapsed around a balloon at the tip of the catheter.
  • In the same procedure, when the balloon is inflated, this stent also expands and stays inside the blockage area.
  • This will permanently hold the blocked airway and stops it from narrowing again which will ultimately help in blood circulation.
  • All the stents are medicine coated to prevent buildup in arteries.

Management

  • Quit smoking
  • Maintain cholesterol levels
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Have a balanced diet
  • Regular exercise
  • Take medicines as prescribed
  • Maintain blood sugar and blood pressure levels
