What Is Leukemia?

When there is a rise in the number of white blood cells in the body, it caused a certain type of cancer, called Leukemia. This brings crowdedness in the body, which reduces space for RBCs and platelets.

Symptoms

Types of leukemia

  • Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL).  Childhood leukemia’s the most common form, which can spread to lymph nodes and the central nervous system.
  • Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML).  Childhood leukemia’s 2nd most common form, which can occur in adults also.
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).  Adult leukemia’s the most common form, which differs for every individual. Some won’t need treatment, however, others may need treatment.
  • Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). The only unnoticeable & asymptomatic form, which can only be detected by blood tests.

Treatment

Chemotherapy – Drugs are used to kill cancer cells in the blood and bone marrow.

Radiation – Leukemia cells are killed or their growth is prevented by high-beam X-rays.

Biologic therapy – Cancer cells are attacked by the immune system and this biological therapy or immunotherapy helps the immune system find foreign cells.

Targeted therapy – There are specific genes or proteins that cancer cells need to grow and these genes are blocked with the help of drugs.

Stem cell transplant – New stem cells are inserted in the blood to replace the leukemia cells.

Surgery – If the spleen is filled with cancer cells, it is removed and it is called a splenectomy.
