Bone Marrow and Bone Marrow Transplant

Bone Marrow Transplant

A spongy tissue that fills the inside space of the bones is called bone marrow. Most of the body’s blood cells are produced and stored inside this space.

A procedure that is used to replace unhealthy or damaged blood cells with blood-forming stem cells in the body is known as a bone marrow transplant or stem cell transplant.

Indications

  • A bone marrow transplant is indicated when bone marrow is not working properly and is not able to produce healthy blood cells.
  • Cancer patients
  • Aplastic Anemia
  • Congenital Neutropenia
  • Sickle Cell Anemia
  • Thalassemia

Types

Autologous Transplant: If the cells are used from the patient’s own body.

Allogenic Transplant: If the cells are acquired from a donor.

Umbilical Cord Transplant: Umbilical cord blood transplant: If the stem cells are extracted from an umbilical cord right after the delivery of a baby.

Procedure

  • This process usually takes 1-2 hours.
  • An empty marrow is needed to insert new stem cells.
  • This is not a surgical procedure but it is similar to a blood transfusion.
  • The bone marrow is inserted into the blood with the help of a catheter, after chemotherapy or radiation.
  • The stem cells will start making new blood cells after finding their way into the bone marrow.
  • After that, added care is provided for infections, complications & side effects.
