A growth that occurs within the spinal cord, is called a spinal cord tumor or an intradural tumor.

  • Intramedullary tumors –start within the spinal cord
  • Extramedullary tumors – begins in the membrane or nerve root of the spinal cord

Diagnosis

  • CT Scan
  • Biopsy

Treatment

  • SURGERY
  • Surgery is the only treatment option for spinal cord tumors.
  • High-frequency waves are used to break the tumor into pieces.
  • If all tumors cannot be removed during surgery, then it is followed by radiation therapy or chemotherapy.
  • The patient may take several weeks to recover.
  • Complications may include temporary sensation loss, bleeding, or nerve tissue damage.

  • Corticosteroids are used to reduce swelling.
