Scoliosis

What Is Scoliosis?

In children or teenagers, a sideways curve in the backbone or spine is known as scoliosis. The angle of the curve can vary but usually, it’s more than 10 degrees on an X-ray.

Symptoms

  • Curve in the back
  • Uneven shoulders, waist, or hips
  • Ribs that are coming out
  • Pain and stiffness in the back
  • Breathing problems
  • Fatigue
  • Leg pain

Types

  • Idiopathic scoliosis – with unknown cause
  • Congenital scoliosis – before birth, problems in vertebrae cause curves in the spine.
  • Neuromuscular scoliosis – happens due to a disorder or injury to the spinal cord.
  • Degenerative scoliosis – with an increase in age, disks and joints of the spine wear out.

Causes

  • Birth defects
  • Infections
  • Tumors
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Marfan syndrome
  • Down syndrome

Treatment

  • Braces – braces are made of plastic and the kids have to wear them around the torso for the whole day & night. They are not visible under clothes and do not interrupt everyday activities.
  • Spinal fusion surgery – the doctor puts pieces of bone or similar material between bones in the spine & hardware is used to hold them until they grow together.
  • Spine and rib-based growing operation – a rod is attached to the spine with hardware. The length of the rod is adjusted as the child grows.
