Cornea Transplant

An operation that is done to replace part of the cornea with corneal tissue from a donor is known as a cornea transplant (keratoplasty). The transparent, dome-shaped surface of the eye is called the cornea. This part helps in entering light into the eye and also enables the eye to see clearly. The cornea transplant restores vision and decreases pain.

Indications

  • Thinning of the cornea
  • Infection in the cornea
  • Swelling in the cornea
  • Ulcers in the cornea
  • Fuchs dystrophy
  • Keratoconus
  • Complications by earlier surgery

Risks Factors

  • Eye infection
  • Increased pressure in the eyeball
  • Rejection of the donor cornea
  • Problems with stitches
  • Bleeding
  • Retinal problems

Procedure

  • Two types of methods are available, the doctor will decide which method is to be used.
  • First method is penetrating keratoplasty, in which an incision is made through the entire thickness of the diseased cornea to remove a circular portion from corneal tissue. Then the donor cornea is placed at this place and suturing is done.
  • Second method is endothelial keratoplasty, in which diseased tissue is removed from the back layers of the cornea and a donor tissue is placed in its place.
  • Grafting can also be done if the damage goes deeper into the stroma. In this procedure, diseased tissue is replaced with healthy donor tissue. This operation is known as deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK).
  • Keratoprosthesis can also be done when the patient cannot have a transplant.

Results
