A chronic disease in which repeated seizures occurs because of the poor signals provided by damaged brain cells.

Types of epilepsy

Focal onset seizures

  • Starts in one area
  • Aware seizure (awake) – change in senses and emotions, uncontrolled movements & dizziness.
  • Impaired awareness seizure (loss of awareness) – blank stare, repeated movements like blinking, chewing, or hand rubbing.

Generalized onset seizures

  • Absence seizures – blank stare, repeated movements like blinking or chewing, and lasts for 10 seconds.
  • Atonic seizures – loss of muscle control, drooping of eyelid or head, and lasts for 15 seconds.
  • Tonic seizures – stiffness in muscles, lasts for 20 seconds.
  • Clonic seizures – repeated relaxing & stiffness of muscles, lasts for 2 mins.
  • Tonic-clonic seizures – a combination of muscle stiffness and repeated jerking of muscles, loss of consciousness, lasts for 5 mins.
  • Myoclonic seizures – shock-like muscle twitches, lasting for 2-4 seconds.
