Atrioventricular Canal Defect

Atrioventricular canal defect

It is a congenital defect in which children are born with a hole in the wall between the chambers of the heart and also has a problem in the valves which results in uncontrolled blood circulation.

Types

  1. Complete defect
  • All chambers are involved
  • A hole is present in the heart’s center.
  • Oxygenated and deoxygenated blood gets mixed.
  • Instead of separate valves only one large valve is present between the upper and lower chambers.
  • Excessive blood moves into the heart which forces it to pump harder resulting in a large heart.
  1. Partial defect
  • Only the upper two chambers are involved
  • Hole is present in the walls of the upper chamber.
  • Changes in the tricuspid and mitral valves prevent their proper closing.
  • Blood can circulate in the wrong direction.

Symptoms

  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Sweating
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Lack of appetite
  • Breathing problems
  • Blue or grey skin color
  • Swelling in legs, feet & ankles
  • Chest pain
  • Wheezing
  • Weight gain

Risk factors

  • Genetics
  • Diabetes
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Smoking
  • German measles

Complications

  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Increased size of the heart
  • Infections in the respiratory tract
  • Heart failure
  • Arrhythmia

Treatment

  • Surgery is recommended for both types of atrioventricular defects.
  • Patches are inserted for the closure of the hole. Gradually, the heart tissue grows around it and the hole is permanently closed.
  • In partial defects, mitral valve repair or replacement is a must for its proper closure.
  • In complete defect, the large valve is divided into two separate valves.

Management

  • Regular check-ups
  • Preventive antibiotics
  • Record the child’s medical history
