Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)

A minimally invasive heart procedure to replace a thickened aortic valve that can’t fully open which results in insufficient blood supply is called TAVI. TAVI can restore blood circulation.

Indications for TAVI

  • It is a treatment for aortic valve stenosis (when the heart's aortic valve thickens and becomes stiff), which results in a problem in valve opening and a reduction in blood circulation.
  • An alternative to surgical aortic valve replacement

Procedure

  • Anesthesia is given to the patient.
  • There are three approaches to the TAVI procedure - Transfemoral –where a small incision is made in the leg. - Transapical – where an incision is made in the chest between the ribs. - Transaortic – where an incision is made in the upper chest.
  • A catheter is inserted in the heart.
  • Then a new valve is placed in the area of the aortic valve with the help of a balloon on the catheter.
  • After that, the catheter is removed, stitching & bandaging are done and the patient is shifted into ICU.
