Liver Cancer
Liver cancer is a life-threatening illness in which cancerous cells are present in the liver and it is one of the steadily growing cancers.
Types
Primary Cancer – begins in the liver
- Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC): A most common form
- Intrahepatic cancer (IHC): Cancer in bile ducts & accounts for 10%-20% of cases
- Angiosarcoma: A very rare form that begins in the lining of the blood cells
Secondary Cancer – begins in another part of the body and spreads into the liver.
Causes
- Long-term inflammation in the bile ducts
- DNA changes turn healthy cells into abnormal cells
Symptoms
- A lump below your rib cage or pain on the right side of your abdomen, or pain near your right shoulder.
- Jaundice
- Unexplained weight loss, nausea, or loss of appetite.
- Fatigue.
- Dark-colored urine.
Treatment
- Active surveillance
- Recommended for small tumors that are limited to only one area.
- Regular imaging tests & screenings are done.
- Treatment is not offered until there are changes in the test results.
- Surgery
- Partial Hepatectomy – a small affected portion is removed leaving the rest of the healthy liver intact.
- Liver transplant – diseased liver is removed & a healthy donated liver is transplanted.
- Ablation therapy
- Cryoablation – a cold gas is passed into the tumor with the help of a needle to freeze & destroy the tumor.
- Radiofrequency ablation – an electric current is passed through a needle into the kidney tumor to heat and destroy the tumor.
- Radiation therapy
- Radiations are used to kill tumor cells.
- Targeted drug therapy

- It is recommended when surgery is not an option.
- Drugs are used to target tumor cells to prevent their growth.
- It can also be used after surgery to prevent reoccurrence.
- Immunotherapy
- Immune system is strengthened with medicines to kill tumor cells.

- Avoid behaviors that lead to cirrhosis
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Get a hepatitis B vaccine
- Avoid hepatitis C
