What is Elbow Replacement?
A surgery in which damaged areas of the elbow joint are removed and replaced with parts made of metal and plastic (implants) is called elbow replacement or elbow arthroplasty. Usually, this procedure is considered more complicated as compared to hip or knee surgeries. However, the success rate of elbow replacements is increased because of the recent developments in surgical techniques and implant designs.
Indications
- Arthritis
- Fractures
- Bone tumor
- Pain and loss of motion
- Other injuries involving elbow
Procedures
- The procedure usually takes 1-2 hours and is done under GA & a nerve block.
- If only one part of the joint needs replacement- as in case of injury to the head of forearm bone (radius), only an artificial head is needed.
- If the whole joint needs replacement- long & slender ends of the artificial parts are fixed into the center part of the bone and the ends of the bones are reshaped.
- A linking cap is needed to hold the artificial implants together if the surrounding ligaments are not strong enough.
- After the surgery, the patient has to wear a splint for a few weeks and also needs a drain (temporary device) to avoid the pooling of fluids at the elbow.
Risk Factors
- Infections
- Fracture
- Nerve injury
- Implant loosening
